Giant figures, fireworks and fire shows are some of the elements that distinguish the Fallas festival in Valencia. It is no coincidence that UNESCO has awarded these festivities the distinction of Intangible Heritage of Humanity, being a festivity that transcends the world and that began many years ago by some carpenters and their patron saint, San José.
The history of the Fallas has its origin in the custom of carpenters to burn junk and useless things on the eve of this festivity, on March 19, a date that has been maintained until today.
It was during the 18th century when the name of Fallas was adopted, which is believed to come from the Latin fac[u]la, diminutive of fax, ‘torch’.
During the 19th century, these festivities were criticized and persecuted, even along with the carnivals, however, movements were born that vindicated these traditions and even culminated in the awarding of trophies to the best Fallas monuments.
Unlike other festivals, the “Fallas in Valencia” are always celebrated between March 17 and 19, to honor San José. Being a prelude to spring, culture, history, party, gastronomy and music are mixed in a single event.
There are many terms behind the Fallas celebrations, we will mention and describe the most important ones so that you can better understand the festival in the capital of Turia
- Mascletá: pyrotechnic show that goes off during the day in the streets and squares, it is very typical of the Valencian Community, and they usually start from the beginning of March.
- The Ninots: these large structures are satires that make fun of everything (and everyone), and seek to be a criticism of public figures or current issues.
- Nit del Foc: spectacular fireworks display that marks the beginning of the end of the festivities.
- Cremà de las Fallas: normally being the night of March 19, the Valencians say goodbye to the Fallas by reducing all the Fallas monuments to ashes.
