Valentine’s Day; What is it and why it celebrates February 14

The Day of Love, the Day of lovers, the day of love and friendship, Valentine’s Day, whatever it is called in your country or city, Valentine’s Day is celebrated today on the 14th of february around the world However, many people do not know where this celebration comes from and why this particular date is commemorated.

Although it is a day that involves displays of love, affection and affection to different people, the story behind Valentine’s Day is somewhat tragic.

Valentine was a doctor who would later become a priest, this became very popular at the time of Claudius II, during the third century in the city of Rome. This emperor forbade weddings among the younger citizens, as he considered young men who were single and without families to be better soldiers on the battlefield. Valentín opposed all this, and in secret, he prepared to marry couples, a decision that would later cost him his life.

Emperor Claudius II found out that Valentine was marrying young couples, for which he was sentenced to die on February 14, 270, blaming him for disobedience and rebellion.

For this fact, at the end of the fifth century, the Catholic Church took this legend and established Valentine’s Day for all February 14.

It was not until the 19th century that this date became more commercial around the world, causing many couples to give each other flowers, chocolates, gifts, romantic dinners or details that express their love.
