Top incredible waterfalls of La Comunidad de Madrid

The waterfalls are one of the most beautiful spectacles of nature. The fall of the water on the rocks, its sound, freshness and surroundings increase the attractiveness of the excursions, especially in spring. Madrid does not stand out for having huge falls, but it has some unique places that will not leave you indifferent. Here are 10 popular, unknown and ideal for hikers waterfalls.

Cascada del Purgatorio

Ruta a la cascada del Purgatorio, en el valle del Paular

Located in the Lozoya valley, the Purgatorio waterfall is a great place to admire after a couple of hours of walking through oak and pine trees. The path, simple, except for a small section of rocks, begins at the Paular Monastery, on the outskirts of Rascafría. As we cross the Perdón bridge, we will pass the well-known natural pools of Las Presillas and we will advance through one of the most beautiful areas of the Sierra de Guadarrama, until we reach the two waterfalls that form the Aguilón stream.

Chorrera de los Litueros

Between yellow brooms, there is a short and ideal route through Puerto de Somosierra that takes us to the highest waterfall in the Community of Madrid: the Chorrera de los Litueros. In a beautiful setting, the Caño stream forms a horsetail as it falls from the Peña del Chorro down three stone steps, later joining Las Pedrizas and thus giving rise to the source of the Duratón. Once there, you can take the opportunity to see the Dehesa Bonita and its centenary birch.

Chorrera de San Mamés

Five minutes from Buitrago de Lozoya, in the Sierra de Guadarrama, lies the Chorrera de San Mamés, between the Purgatorio waterfall and the Los Litueros waterfall. To get there, you must follow the path of the church that is at the town entrance. The route crosses through open tracks with oak groves and cattle farms. Only a small section goes through a pine forest. The Pinilla stream descends here by a rocky fall with a fairly regular slope. standing at 30 meters in height, this is one of the most striking landforms in the area.

Cascada del Hervidero

Very close to the capital, the Hervidero waterfall is quite accessible for a family outing and for cycling. The route on foot is long, but comfortable, with hardly any unevenness. The path begins in San Agustín de Guadalix, after the bridge at the town exit, and runs parallel to the river among lush and colorful vegetation. When you finally arrive to the waterfalls and the fabulous pool formed by the waters of the Guadalix, you will understand why this place was chosen for a scene in Red Eagle.

Cascada del Hornillo

For this one, we go a little further west, where the Hornillo stream offers us this chorrera in the middle of a forest of oaks, poplars, pines and jarales. To reach it, you can leave from the Aceña bridge, between Robledondo and Santa María de la Alameda. Children and adults can travel this path, as it is relatively short and with little unevenness. Upon return, you can take a circular route and contemplate the Aceña reservoir. On a clear day, we will enjoy an excellent view of the Monastery of El Escorial and even the Sierra de Gredos.

Chorrera de Mojonavalle

Near the Purgatorio waterfall, between the ports of Morcuera and Canencia, the waters of the Sestil del Maíllo stream, a tributary of the Lozoya, form the Mojonavalle chorrera at its source. With a unique birch forest in the area, the Mirador de Mojonavalle and an ecological path between pines, oaks, yews and other trees (two of which have been classified as unique by the Community of Madrid), this excursion offers a beautiful show for lovers of nature. It is an easy walk to do with children: somewhat shady, humid, beautiful and a pleasure for the senses.

Chorros del Manzanares

The upper course of the Manzanares River, in the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, next to La Pedriza, offers a set of waterfalls, and their pools, known as the jets or chorreras of the Manzanares. To get there, you have to go up the left bank of the river, following a path that leaves from the Canto Cochino car park (it usually fills up quickly). On the right bank, you will arrive at the Green Pool, also worth seeing. Trees, bushes and the sound of water between the granite rocks will accompany you along the way.

Ducha de los Alemanes

We continue in the Sierra de Guadarrama. This time, in the Fuenfría valley, Cercedilla. Here the Navazuela stream offers a small waterfall whose name, “Ducha de los Alemanes”, recalls the first mountaineers who took a shower in it at the beginning of the 20th century. To get there, we will take the forest path between the pines from Las Dehesas, leaving the pools aside, and walk along the old Roman road, along the Republica Highway and along the Victory Path. The route can be completed by approaching the Miradores de los Poetas and the Camilo José Cela Clock.

Cascada de la Presa del Pradillo

The Cascada de la Presa del Pradillo is quite close to the Purgatorio waterfall, so you can go through both with a circular route. Still, if we wish to go straight and not walk too much, we can start from the La Isla recreational area. Due to its proximity, this is a good option to go with children. Following the path along the Lozoya river, you immediately reach the old reservoir, whose wide waterfall served as the old light factory. At the top of the noisy waterfall, the landscape is reflected in a quiet reservoir surrounded by pine trees, showing an idyllic picture of nature.
