Mount Abantos is a mountain in the Sierra de Guadarrama in the Central system, a chain that runs from east to west through the center of the Iberian Peninsula in Spain. Most of the mountain is located in the Madrid municipality of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, with part of its western slope in the Castilian province of Avila. This mountain formation is of great historical importance. Its southern slope was chosen by King Philip II to build the Monastery of El Escorial, a work of the sixteenth century. Around this building arose the current municipality of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, the main urban center of its surroundings. On its northern slope, in the area of Cuelgamuros, is the Valle de los Caídos (Valley of the Fallen).

On August 21, 1999, its eastern slope suffered a devastating arson attack. It burned 450 hectares of Scots pine and resin pine forest, burning 170,000 trees and destroying the habitats of many animals and birds. Today, the pines planted in the reforestation (started in the autumn of 2000) are growing, although the actions carried out by the Department of the Environment for this reforestation were highly criticized as they did not take into account the natural regeneration that was already taking place.
