Las Cárcavas – An Otherworldly Stage – Sunday, September 21st

This time we will visit the natural border between Madrid and Guadalajara to discover a place that seems to be from another planet. These impressive reddish earth formations, known as badlands, were sculpted by the erosion of water and wind over thousands of years. The result is a spectacular landscape of pinnacles, ridges and canyons that will make you feel as if you were walking in Arizona… but without leaving Spain!

🌍 D id you know that Las Cárcavas is located just below the Pontón de la Oliva, one of the first dams built in Madrid in the 19th century? It is a place where history and geology go hand in hand in a stunning natural setting.

🌿 Walk Details
Our route will be from. approx. 16 km The hike is moderately steep but accessible to most people. The effort is totally worth it, since from the top of the gullies we will have incredible panoramic views of the Sierra Norte.
Halfway through the route, we will stop for a relaxed picnic: good food, nature and friends before continuing the adventure.

🚌 How to get there
All our routes are accessible by public transportation. We will go by bus, but if you have a car, you can bring it and share the gas costs with other hikers.

Quick tips for a great day

• Wear hiking boots or shoes with good soles: the terrain is stony and loose soil.
• Carry at least 1.5 liters of water, there are no fountains on the road.
• Bring light food for the picnic (sandwich, fruit, snacks).
• Sunscreen, hat and sunglasses: there are few trees and a lot of sun exposure.
• And, of course, a lot of adventure!

4. Don’t forget the sunscreen to protect your skin.
5. And yes, that swimsuit!

We will go by public transport, so bring cash for the bus, (approx 10 euros round trip) which is not included in the price (under 26 years old free with Transport Pass). If you have your own car, you can bring it and take other participants with you to share the gas.
