Every year, between January 14 and 17, the San Antón Festivities, the patron saint of animals, are celebrated. These aim to promote the care and love of animals, and in 2022 the hard work carried out by veterinarians in Madrid will be honored.

 

For this edition there is an extensive program of activities that includes a proclamation, dog shows, pet parades and the traditional bread rolls. These will be concentrated in the Galería de Cristal de Cibeles, the church of San Antón and the streets of Chueca.

The festivities will start this Friday, January 14, with the sale of bread rolls in the Church of San Antón, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. If you cannot attend on Friday, this sale will continue on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

 

Activities on Saturday January 15

On Saturday, January 15, the official opening of the festivities will be held in the Crystal Gallery of the Palacio de Cibeles at 11:00 a.m., followed by an exhibition of the Canine Unit of the Association of Professional Canines. At 1:00 p.m. on this day, the proclamation by Irene Villa will begin.

 

 

If you are looking to welcome a puppy in your home, that same afternoon at the Palacio de Cibeles there will be a presentation of foster dogs seeking adoption from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Likewise, there will be an exhibition of assistance dogs at 5:30 p.m. and of trainers at 6:30 p.m. The activities at the Palacio de Cibeles will end at 8:00 p.m. that day.

On the same Saturday, January 15, there will be an open day at the Animal Protection Center of the Madrid City Council. You can attend informative talks and live with some dogs, there will be a prior registration due to capacity limitations. This center is located on the Barrio de la Fortuna road, 33.

Activities for Sunday, January 16, 2022

If you have a pet and you want to parade with it, on Sunday January 16 you can attend the Pet Parade and market in the Plaza de Chueca from 1:00 p.m.

 

Also, on Sunday 16, activities will continue in the Cibeles Palace Gallery with the exhibition of the Canine Unit of the Civil Guard at 11:00 a.m., another at 12:30 p.m. of the Canine Professional Training School, then at 1:30 p.m. there will be the exhibition of the Canine Unit of the National Police and finally from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. the parades of the animals of the protectors.

Activities on Monday, January 17

One of the most anticipated activities of the San Antón Festivities is the blessing of the animals, this will take place in the Church of San Antón from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at which time the priest will bless the animals in front of to church. Likewise, there will be a higher Mass at 12:00 hours and the Solemn Mass at 7:00 p.m., all will have capacity limitations due to the current situation

 

 

On the same Monday, January 17, the Vuelta de San Antón will take place in the Chueca neighborhood, where the animals will be able to walk with their owners in the streets that go from San Mateo, Fuencarral and Hernán Cortes.
